First of all you must be able to take consistently care of yourmoney and play them the right way. Even if you are anextraordinary poker player, you can't stay on the winning courseif you can't manage your money correctly. A correct managementwill tell you the types of games to play, games that areaffordable for your bankroll and will also predict the long runwinnings.
Many qualified poker players don't know how to interpret theirbankroll. They play high poker limit games, games that have suchlimits that their bankroll can't take. There are times ineveryone's life when we can get unlucky, and those times have tobe taken into consideration when playing poker. You may playyour best, without any mistakes at all and still lose constantlyand your bankroll has to be able to absorb such losses. It issaid a bankroll of at least 300 - 350 times the biggest bet canbe the solution for a good money management. You know best yourpoker statistics, but even if you always win and your bankrollis 50 times the bigger bet you might loose it. The same thinghappens if you don't let the bankroll grow a little and youalways take out the money won. A good money management meansplaying games you can afford and also keeping the bankroll at arather stable size.
Secondly, observe all. To observe means to know. And knowinggives you a head start in poker. When playing you will not spendas much time contemplating your cards as you may think. You willbe left with plenty of time on your hands and you can very welluse that time to observe the movements and tactics of all theother players. Some player might even say what cards they hadwhen they throw away a hand. If you pay attention, you can builda model in your head that will predict future behaviors andpatters for that specific player. This does not mean telling, asin real life poker, it's different and it requires moreattention from your part. In the mean time, you must payattention to your own game as well, build yourself a image agame style that can't be predicted because there are times whenyou might come across experienced players that will also try andobserve you game style.
So whenever you spot a fault in your opponent's game, examineyourself for that kind of transparency to determine if you arenot doing it too.
